In addition to my day job, I am a freelance writer. The checks arrive erratically, are not enough to solely make a living and while I know how much I agreed to before writing a piece, I received a check that didn't add up. Had I forgotten something? Have I lost the ability to count in round numbers? I would have to ask the editor and for a moment I hesitated for fear of looking ridiculous.
A fabulous surprise, I would now be paid a little bit more. I have never received a raise and not known it until I opened my check and so this was quite fabulous.
